Whales are stunning creatures, known collectively as cetaceans, and there are around 90 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises around the globe.

In Iceland, 23 species of whales have been observed but some species are not as common as others. While the humpback whale (Megaptera novaengangliae) is a frequently seen around Iceland and probably one of the more common species, there are others that are less common and are rarely found elsewhere than in certain places of the country, like the orca (Orcinus orca) that is more commonly found in the West. Even though other species, like the beluga whale (Deplhinapterus leucas), are technically an Icelandic specie they are extremely rare and not likely to be spotted.

Whale Watching

Join us for a semi-private whale watching tour on our small zodiac boat!

Let us take you on an adventurous journey to see the humpback whales that like to hang out in the fjord of Eyjafjörður.

This is a very personal tour with a guide and a few guests. We do not have a set time for these tours, but the timeframe for them is in the late afternoon, early evening. The duration of the tour is determined by the distance of the whales from Hjalteyri along with their behavior.

We try to make sure that both guests, guides and whales are happy and unbothered.

Whale Snorkeling

Join us for whale snorkeling!

Let us show you the humpback whales in their natural habitat, underwater, and the possibility to join them! You’ll get all the equipment that you’ll need, with the added luxury of a dry suit so being cold should not be an issue.

The groups are very small, and the timing is in late afternoon, early evening, the same as our whale watching tours. The duration of the tour is determined by the distance of the whales from Hjalteyri along with their behavior.

In this tour, it is the whales that come first, and they control your tour. We do not want to bother them and if they show signs of distress, we will leave them to themselves.
